“Have you heard from Emily? She’s not here. I woke up and she was gone.”
I looked at my daughter. Her eyes were closed, but tears had slid into her hairline.
“No,” I said.
The lie tasted like metal.
Daniel exhaled hard. “If she calls you, tell her I’m worried, okay? She’s been unstable lately. Saying things. Making accusations.”
