Chapter 5 — Cross

Wade Tolliver was sixty, silver-haired, courteous, and very good.

He did not attack me. I want people to understand that, because it is the thing nobody tells you about cross-examination. The bad ones shout. The good ones are gentle with you for forty minutes and let the jury watch you agree with them.

He established that I loved my daughter. He established that I had been in the trauma bay within twenty minutes and had given instructions about evidence handling. He established that I am a physician of forty years’ standing who understands documentation better than most sworn officers.
