At 10:25, Claire Ashford gets out of the SUV and returns to her own car. At 10:26, the SUV’s driver’s door opens and Daniel Carter Miller steps out, and my daughter walks across a gas station forecourt toward the man who would try to kill her ninety minutes later.

They are eleven feet apart. He raises both hands, palms out, the universal gesture of a man explaining something reasonable. She says something. He steps toward her and takes hold of her upper arm.
She pulls back and her hand closes on his left cuff and she tears it.
It takes less than a second. On the video it looks almost like nothing — a stumble, an arm coming free. Then she is walking away with her fist closed and he is standing in a parking lot looking at his own wrist.
