Not out of kindness to me.
She was extremely clear about this when I brought it up, and she was almost annoyed that I had.

“A child who thinks his father chose not to come carries that for thirty years.
A child who thinks his father was lied to has a story with a shape to it.
I picked the one that costs him less.
If the true one had cost him less I’d have used that one and you’d have had to live with it.”
