Don’t Let Your Mother Answer for You
It tells you that somebody who loves you has been carrying a suspicion, quietly, protectively, for a long time, and has now been sadly vindicated.
None of it was true.
There had been no suspicion.
My mother had never mentioned a single concern about my wife in six years, because there had never been one.
She invented an entire history of private worry in eleven syllables on a phone call, and I never questioned it for one second, because why would I.
And then, for the next four months, she was the only person I talked to.
That is the mechanism and it took me four years and a professional to see it.
