Eighteen Years After Ray Abandoned Him on a Dirt Road, Thomas Found His Mother’s Letter
“Ray Whitfield has been the only trustee since two thousand five.”
“The only one.”
“The only one.” He turned the printout back around.
“The trust requires an accounting every year.
He’s filed all of them but the last two, and nobody here has pressed him on it.”
“Why not, though?”
“Because a bank only pushes when it’s our money on the line.” He picked his pen back up.
There was one more line in the file he wouldn’t read aloud without a subpoena in his hand and a lawyer at the table, and he told me so twice.
