“You’re trying to borrow against our home.”

Something shifted across his face — a slight tightening around his mouth. I recognized it immediately. I’d seen it from patients at the clinic, whenever an uncomfortable question came too close to the truth.

“Forget the request,” he said. “I’ll find another solution.” He carried his plate to the sink and left it there.

The next morning, I logged into the company’s accounting system. My access had been removed. My password no longer worked. I tried the administrator recovery option; the recovery email had been changed.
