Daniel glanced toward the oven. “She’s spending today with friends.”
“Will she be joining you after I leave?”
He didn’t answer.
Eleanor sighed. “Please don’t make a scene.”
That was when I untied my apron. I walked away, because staying would have meant helping them stage my own disappearance.
Chapter 6 — The Drive Without a Destination
The cold air caught in my lungs. I sat in my car at the end of the driveway and looked back at the house. Through the dining-room windows, I watched Eleanor moving between the kitchen and the table while Daniel stood near the front door, staring toward my car.
