It was Oscar Garza, the lead corporate attorney for Mendoza Development.

He tapped a heavy brass fountain pen against his palm three times.

“Good afternoon, Elena,” Oscar said.

His tone was brisk, professional, and completely uninvited.

“There’s no need to trouble the branch staff with routine corporate structuring.”

“I asked about a transfer slip with my maiden name on it,” I said, meeting his eyes without stepping back.

“Mendoza Development manages several historic land files in this sector,” Oscar said.

He reached past my shoulder, picked up the slip the teller had set on the counter, and slid it into his briefcase before I could take it.
