Inside was the certified copy of Tyler’s original building permit application that we had retrieved from the county records office.

“We are filing a formal complaint with the county zoning board of appeals this morning,” Rachel said.

“We have the proof now.”

She pointed to the second page of the permit application, where a detailed site plan showed the exact legal boundary line.

Tyler’s signature sat directly underneath the drawing, dated three months ago.

“He signed this drawing himself, which means he knew,” Rachel said.

“He told me it was a contractor mistake,” I said, adjusting my glasses.
