Endurance Over Love
For three years I had carried that loss with a second, private wound folded inside it — the belief, planted so carefully I’d never questioned its source, that some coldness in me had been part of why it happened.
I had lain awake with that. I had let it change how I saw myself. And it had been manufactured, like everything else, and reading the folder that proved it was the closest I came, in eight weeks, to not being able to go on.
It was also the moment I stopped being afraid of what this day would cost me. A person who has already had her grief stolen and handed back to her as evidence has very little left to be frightened of.
The hallway went completely silent.
My mother staggered back a step, one hand pressed hard over her mouth, staring at Victoria as though the face in front of her belonged to a stranger.
