Endurance Over Love
My father stared at the page, his hands beginning to shake.
“Your grandmother — signed it to you? Twelve years ago?”
“Twelve years ago,” I said. “Every word you ever said about endurance, about earning the name, about proving yourself — all of it was hot air. The house was already mine before you finished pouring that drink. Victoria spent twelve years destroying my marriage, stealing Julian’s money, and poisoning this family, for a prize that was never, ever on the table.”
I watched my father understand what he had done. Not the crime — the crime was Victoria’s.
But the thing underneath it, the thing he’d set in motion with a tumbler of whiskey and a grandiose speech he never even remembered giving.
He had turned his two daughters into competitors for his approval and dressed it up as wisdom about family.
