That evening I invited her and Chloe back to the house for what I described as a private conversation about Elena’s future. I told them I was ready to make permanent decisions.
Then I called every person whose testimony and authority would matter when their plan came apart.

My mother came into the living room dressed in silk, as though arriving for a formal dinner. Chloe brought champagne.
My mother took my favorite chair and folded her hands.
“This will be difficult,” she said, “but one day you’ll understand we did it for you.”
