Chapter 2: The Audit of Betrayal

Adrian arrived the following morning. True to the script, he was clutching an enormous bouquet of white lilies and wearing the exact expression of a wounded, misunderstood husband that had fooled everyone in our orbit for half a decade.

He didn’t make it past the threshold. A private security officer, hired by Mara the night before, stepped squarely into his path outside my room.

Adrian pivoted instantly to his public persona, raising his voice just enough for the nursing staff—and me—to hear the performance.

“Please, you don’t understand,” he pleaded, thick with fabricated concern. “My wife is confused. She hit her head very hard in the fall. I just need to hold her hand.”

Mara stepped out of the shadows of the hallway in a sharp navy suit, looking every inch the corporate predator she was.

“Your wife is lucid, legally represented, and currently protected by an emergency judicial order,” she said, carrying the flat authority of the law. “If you don’t vacate these premises in ten seconds, the officer will arrest you for violating a restraining order.
