“Three weeks ago,” Maria said, “I found payment records in the study.

I wasn’t looking for them; I was cleaning.

But I saw the names, and I recognized them, because Andrew had told me about the men who threatened him.

Vanessa was sending money to those same men.”

“To help him?” Daniel asked, reaching, even now, for an innocent explanation.

“That’s what I thought at first,” Maria said.
