But Daniel did not throw away every broken piece.

He asked an artist to take several of the fragments and set them into a mosaic in the garden, a thing of deliberate, jagged, unexpected beauty, the broken pieces of his grandmother’s mirror catching the sun and throwing it back in a hundred directions at once, because he did not want to erase what had happened.

He wanted to remember that something broken could still be made into something beautiful.

And it was beside that mosaic, in a small garden ceremony, that Andrew and Maria were eventually married.
