I stopped breathing for a moment. “What?”

“With the luggage, the coolers, and the kids’ things, there wasn’t enough room.”

“So you left Mia?”

“There was food. The doors are locked. She has television. We’ll be back next weekend.”

I could hear laughter behind her. Not directed at me. Somehow that made it worse — their vacation carried on around the reality that my child was alone.
