Sometimes she asked if Grandma Diane had forgotten her. I answered truthfully. “No. She made a choice that did not protect you.”
“Because the car was full?”
“No car is too full for the child you promised to care for.”
“Will I see her again?”
“Only when it is safe, and when you want to.” That answer satisfied her for now.
