Every Light in the House
Chapter 12 — Someone Comes When Called
The trip happened the following April. Nothing about it was luxurious. We rented a two-bedroom condo within walking distance of the beach. Andrew made breakfast.
Grandma brought crossword puzzles, three hats, and enough sunscreen for a small camp. Mia packed four books, her pink swimsuit, eleven crayons, and the moon-shaped light.
We spent mornings beside the water and evenings eating seafood from paper baskets at a family restaurant overlooking the bay.
On the second night, Mia asked if she could switch off the bedroom lamp. “Are you sure?” I asked.
“The moon light is enough.”
I kissed her forehead. “Whatever helps you sleep.”
