After one appointment, Harper asked if we could go to the library.

We spent an hour among picture books and then borrowed a book about constellations.

At home she taped glow-in-the-dark stars above her temporary bed.

She arranged them into a crooked shape she called the Brave Rabbit.

“He knows where the door is,” she explained.

I smiled and said the rabbit seemed very smart.

It would have been easy to turn her words into another clue, another worry.

Instead, I turned out the light, looked at the bright paper stars with her, and asked which one was his nose.
