Chapter 3 — The Choice

Let me tell you exactly who I was, that morning, standing on that rug.

I was twenty-eight years old.

I was single.

I worked as an auto mechanic in a local garage and made barely thirty-five thousand dollars a year.

I lived in a cramped one-bedroom apartment.

I knew how to cook maybe five meals.

I had no savings to speak of, and I had never once in my life changed a diaper.
