Chapter 4 — Thirty-Five Thousand a Month

Three days later, a former classmate from my home-care course called with a job.

A wealthy family outside Nashville needed a live-in caregiver for a fifty-year-old executive who’d survived a bad car accident eight months earlier and had very limited movement in both legs.

The pay was thirty-five thousand dollars a month, with a private room, and I said yes before she finished describing it, because Florence’s parting words had been ringing in my ears for three days and I was ready to find out exactly how much I was worth.

The estate was enormous, tucked inside a gated community behind iron and stone.
