Everyone laughed when they sent an eighty-year-old man and his eighteen-year-old wife off to spend their wedding night together. “Let’s see if Grandpa can make it until morning,” one relative joked through a burst of laughter. He didn’t respond. He simply picked up his old briefcase and closed the door. When six relatives opened it the next morning, they stopped laughing when they discovered what he had been protecting all night.
Chloe retained full ownership of her late father’s apartment and officially reclaimed her maiden name.
Upon stepping out onto the steps of the courthouse, Chloe paused and looked at the official paperwork in her hands.
“So I am officially no longer your wife,” Chloe observed quietly.
“Thank goodness for that,” Walter teased gently.
“I was already growing extra gray hairs trying to keep up with you.”
Chloe looked at him in surprise before bursting into genuine laughter.
“I am still your family though, right?” Chloe asked softly.
