Everyone laughed when they sent an eighty-year-old man and his eighteen-year-old wife off to spend their wedding night together. “Let’s see if Grandpa can make it until morning,” one relative joked through a burst of laughter. He didn’t respond. He simply picked up his old briefcase and closed the door. When six relatives opened it the next morning, they stopped laughing when they discovered what he had been protecting all night.
“Then why did you insist on driving me all the way here?” Chloe asked.
“Because I simply wanted the satisfaction of watching you arrive safely,” Walter answered gently.
“Are you going to be waiting here to pick me up when classes end too?” Chloe teased.
“Don’t push your luck,” Walter grunted back with a smirk.
Yet when her final class ended that afternoon, his car was parked right by the entrance waiting for her.
Over the following months, this routine transformed into a warm family tradition.
