That is the part I cannot forget.

A five-year-old with a crushed leg, and he did not scream.

He looked at me, and his eyes filled slowly with tears, and then — and this is the thing that broke me and remade me in the same instant — he turned his head, just slightly, to look past me, toward the rear door.

Toward the door through which his father had just carried another woman’s child to safety.

And then he looked back at me, my brave, quiet, wounded boy, and he said, in a small clear voice I will hear for the rest of my life:

“Mom.
