The second, the trust suspension, was the machine that had funded his entire adult life: the comfortable apartment, the failed businesses I had quietly caught, the lifestyle he had mistaken for his own achievement.
He had signed the misconduct clause six years earlier without reading it, the way he did most things, assuming, I suppose, that it was a formality, that the safety net had no holes because the safety net had always held.
And the third, the lease, was the ground under his company itself — the office he walked into every morning believing he was a man of independent standing.
