And what Hazel’s letter did, at last, was introduce the thing our love had always lacked, which was not a limit on the love itself, but a limit on its expression. I forgive you as your mother — the love, undiminished, freely given. But forgiveness is not a return — the boundary, finally, thirty years late.
She had learned the thing it took nearly losing everything to learn: that you can love someone completely and still refuse to let them back into a house they have not learned to be safe in; that forgiveness is something you give for your own sake, to set down the weight of the wrong, while a return is something the other person must earn, for theirs; and that a parent who confuses the two, who thinks forgiving means reopening the door, does not spare their child at all — they only raise a man who believes love has no price, and sends him out to break other people the way he broke them.
