Part Eighteen: Daniels and Cooper

“Ma’am? Are you Sarah Vance?”

“Yes.”

“I’m Officer Daniels, this is Officer Cooper. Is your son Julian Vance inside the residence?”

And behind me, from the hallway, in socks, in the T-shirt he sleeps in, my son said: “Mom?”

I want to describe what happened to Julian’s face, because it is the single clearest image I have from four years of this and because it is not what I understood it to be at the time.
