Debra Ngwenya is a paediatric physiotherapist who has worked with wheelchair users for twenty-six years, and I went to see her on my own, with Jillian’s permission, on the second of November 2023, and she gave me forty minutes and a sheet of paper, and I am going to reproduce what she told me because it is the single most useful thing I learned in three years and because it is not difficult.

She said: “A manual wheelchair is not a product.

It is a prescription with wheels on it.”

Seat width first.

You measure across the hips, seated, and you add about an inch total — half an inch of clearance each side.

That is all.

Not room to grow.

Not a bit of space to be comfortable.
