Chapter 34 — The Fence

On a crisp Saturday in October we went to Elodie’s school fall festival.

She ran a three-legged race, and Aurora and I cheered so loudly the other parents laughed.

When she crossed the line in second place and came running to us, I scooped her into the air.

“You were amazing, princess!”

And as I spun her around, I saw someone standing beyond the chain-link fence at the edge of the schoolyard.
