I heard his breathing change on the other end.

“Has something happened to the property?”

“Have you been staying at the cabin lately?” I asked.

“No, I haven’t been up there in several weeks,” he explained.

“I’ve been staying in town with my daughter while some old plumbing problems get fixed.”

“Could you please meet me up at the cabin tonight?” I asked desperately.

A long, heavy silence stretched between us.

“Why do you need to meet me at the cabin in the middle of the night, Hannah?” he asked quietly.
