Chapter 8 — The Blue Folder Opens

I drew the bright blue folder out of my canvas bag, and I set it on the folding table, between the rows of red cups, and I opened it so that everyone could see.

I laid the papers out one at a time, and I read them out in a plain, unhurried voice.

A receipt from 2019: eighteen hundred and sixty dollars, for a private home nurse after Rosalind’s gallbladder surgery.

A record from 2021: twenty-seven hundred dollars, for the funeral arrangements when Brandon’s father died.
