The folder was my refusal of the fog.

It was eight years of insisting, to myself, that what happened happened, that the numbers were real, that I was not imagining the slow one-way flow of my life into other people’s comfort.

When the day came, the folder did not need to argue or plead or raise its voice.

It only needed to be opened.

The truth had been sitting in that drawer the entire time, patient as a stone, waiting for someone to turn on the light.
