Toby picked up a small metal spoon, blew on a spoonful of the broth with great care, and held it out toward me.

“Then you should try this bite right now, Mommy.”

I leaned down, and I tasted it.

“That,” I told him, “is absolutely delicious.”

Chapter 21 — Clean Up Your Own Dishes

After he had eaten, Toby carried his own bowl to the sink.

“My teacher says everybody should clean up their own dishes after eating,” he announced.

I stepped forward out of pure habit to help him, and he held up one small hand to stop me.
