Chapter 4 — The Instruction List

That afternoon I drove to Rosalind’s spacious home in San Diego, where I found my sister-in-law, Heather, on a video call, offering loud opinions on her mother’s choice of outfit.

“We will have thirty distinguished guests,” Rosalind announced, smoothing her skirt without looking at me.

“We cannot possibly serve simple food.

The district attorney’s wife notices every tiny detail.”

Then she turned and cast a slow, disdainful look down the length of my plain jeans and casual shirt.

“And do dress properly on the day.
