And I looked past her out the window at the Houston skyline going gold in the evening, and understood that I was no longer the quiet, agreeable woman who had walked into that hospital at three in the morning.

I had saved the physical heart of the man who betrayed me, and in doing it, I had finally found the one life that most needed saving.

It had been mine all along.

Love does not ask a woman to swallow humiliation, or hide her light, or shrink her own shape so someone else can feel important.

And sometimes the truest act of love — for yourself, and for the daughter watching you to learn what a woman is allowed to be — is knowing exactly when to open the door, walk through it, and not look back.
