The gate stayed shut between us, and I understood, walking away, that I had not shut it out of cruelty, or even out of anger, which had long since burned down to ash.

I had shut it because on the other side of it was my life, and my daughter, and the truth, and a whole crowd of people standing unashamed in the sun — and Adrian had spent eight years teaching me, without ever meaning to, that the one thing you must never do is hold a door open for the person who taught you to be ashamed of yourself.

So I let it stay closed.

And I walked into the light, and it was warm, and it was mine, and I did not miss him for a single step of it.
