I was deceived because the deception was aimed with precision at the one blind spot every human being has: we do not scrutinize the people we have already decided to trust.
Trust is, by its nature, the decision to stop checking.
That is what it is for.
You cannot live in a state of permanent suspicion of everyone; the mind would collapse under it; and so we grant trust to a small number of people, and having granted it, we lower the guard, and stop running the small unconscious verifications we run on strangers.
This is not a flaw in us.
