Richard did not look any of those things.

He looked like a man who had just seen something he recognized.

Something he had believed was buried forever, and was now, impossibly, glowing on a screen in a Coral Gables clinic.

And my mother — my quiet, uncomplaining, seventy-five-year-old mother — lifted her head, and looked my husband dead in the eyes, and said, in a voice that did not shake:

“I told you that one day my body would speak for me.”
