Chapter 5 — Several Documents in Person

Roman tore the envelope open.

His amusement carried him through the first ten pages — he even smirked at one point, murmuring something about how I’d regret this.

On page eleven, his hand went still.

“The house?” he said.

I rested my aching wrist on the table beside my untouched plate and said nothing.

Lorna opened her leather case again.

“The house,” she said, “is only the first thing you’ve misunderstood tonight.” What page eleven told him was simple.
