In the moment, in the kitchen, in the dark of a marriage, that power is very real and very frightening, and I lived under it for nine years.

But it has one great weakness, which is that it only works in the dark, in the moment, where there are no witnesses and no record.

It cannot survive daylight.

A raised hand is terrifying in a private kitchen and completely powerless in front of a photograph of the bruise it made, a physician’s report, and a recording of the voice that threatened it.

That is what I had understood, and what I had spent months quietly building: not a weapon to match his, but the one thing his weapon could not touch.
