I want to be honest with you, at the end, about what this is and what it is not.

It is not a happy ending.

I still wake in the middle of the night with my arm reaching across the bed for Adrian, and find the cold sheet.

I still stop outside Maya’s bedroom door and feel the floor drop out from under me.

I still, some evenings, pick a small wooden toy truck up off a shelf and hold it against my chest and cannot let it go for a long time.

The grief has not gone away, and it has not gotten smaller, and I have stopped expecting it to, because I have come to understand that it never will — that it is simply the shape my love for them takes now that they are gone, and I would not trade one ounce of the weight of it, because the weight of it is them.
