I was going to carry my three people for the rest of my life, and build a life large enough and good enough to carry them well, and do work in the world that was worthy of their names.

That is not the same as moving on.

It is the opposite of moving on.

It is deciding to move forward while carrying everything, and to let the carrying be the love, and the love be the life.

But sitting alongside that grief now, where six months of silence used to be, there is something else.

Something strong, and clean, and unyielding.

My family believed that when they chose a birthday dinner over three caskets, they had merely dodged one uncomfortable afternoon — that they could ignore my pain until the day it became convenient to come collect their share of it.
