For a lifetime, my children had shown me one face, the face of loving sons and a loving daughter, because they knew I was watching and they knew what I wanted to see, and I had wanted to see it so badly that I had helped them hold the mask in place.

The only thing that changed today was that, for once, they did not know I was watching.

They thought I was asleep on a table.

And in the space they believed was private, with no mother’s eyes on them, they showed their real faces, and I simply, for the first time in thirty years, let those faces be seen and recorded and believed instead of explained away.

That is not a setup.
