On the top of the stack was a single bright yellow card, and on its front a little boy had drawn a lunch tray, and a heart, and one sentence in big sprawling letters: Thank you for believing kindness exists. Fifty years ago, I spent three dollars out of a tiny paycheck to feed a hungry boy whose name I barely knew, and I thought it was nothing — a small ordinary kindness in a hard world, gone as soon as it was done.

I did not know that those three dollars would one day come back across half a century to save my life.

I held the yellow card against my chest, and I looked out at the sunlit garden where the children were playing, and the three empty chairs were gone, for good.

I was finally, completely home.

THE END.
