Chapter 20 — A Warm Life

On Christmas morning, one year to the day after my family threw me out into the snow, I drove out alone to my grandfather’s old wooden cabin overlooking Lake Pine.

I lit a fire in the stone fireplace, and I set the mahogany box on the hearth beside it, where the firelight moved over the dark grain of the wood, and I stood at the tall window and watched the snow drift down, soft and unhurried, over the frozen surface of the lake.

It was the same cold morning it had been a year before.
