Forty-One Thousand Dollars and a Yellow Paper Envelope
The motel on Route 4 had a sign missing two letters.
Frank, the manager, sat behind a counter with a fan clicking back and forth.
A bucket sat under the eave by the office door.
“Thirty-nine dollars,” he said.
“Cash.”
I put two twenties on the counter.
My gate money came to eighty-six dollars and change.
Frank didn’t touch the bills.
