Forty Percent
When I lifted the lid, most of the jewelry was gone. The pearl earrings were still there. My grandmother’s sapphire brooch was not. Neither was the gold bracelet Thomas had given me for our twenty-fifth anniversary.
I searched the drawer beneath the bed. Nothing.
Vanessa appeared in the doorway. “Are you almost finished?”
“Where is my jewelry?”
Her expression didn’t change. “What jewelry?”
“The bracelet and the sapphire brooch.”
