Chapter 6 — The Sedan

I didn’t tell Daniel or Vanessa who was coming. An hour later, a long black sedan pulled up in front of the house. Daniel opened the door before the driver could reach the porch.

He’d expected a taxi.

Harold Bennett stepped out. At seventy-two he still carried himself with the quiet authority of a man used to entering rooms where serious decisions were made — silver hair neatly arranged, a charcoal overcoat over his suit, leaning slightly on a polished cane after recent knee surgery.

The driver opened the rear door; Harold ignored him and walked straight to me.

“Maggie.” He took both my hands.
