The sharp ringing sound cut through the chatter.

The room went completely quiet.

Vanessa touched Kendra gently on the shoulder.

“I want to make a quick toast,” Vanessa said.

She looked down the length of the table straight at me.

“You all know how much I love this sweetie,” Vanessa said.

I rubbed my left collarbone and made myself smile.

“We’ve been through so many years together,” Vanessa said.
